Here's an Essex friend for scale in front of the schooner we saw at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum a couple weeks ago.
To sail this boat, the skipper removes the aft hatch and slides in, working in a recumbent position, reaching back to use the tiller. Beautiful, but must feel like you're sailing in your own coffin! I don't have the specs on this boat, but it is very small. To keep it floating on its lines with the skipper aboard, several hundred pounds of ballast are placed well forward in the hold.
