I have sailed one of the M36s in conditions a bit more sporty than that

() The boat did heel a bit, but it was solid and helm control was single finger. The boat was extremely well behaved and EASY to sail, particularly beating. Basically, I think Sparkman and Stephens got it just right. You are right though, the M36 is not a heavy weather boat, but it can handle 20-25 knots with ease.
