Hi Rich,
Without seeing precisely what he was dealing with, hard to say, of course...
but there isn't much you can't do with a Band-It for any sort of spar repair, and many other things...
A bit pricey, but any boat making a long passage would do well to have one of these aboard, IMHO...

I agree with Brian, and others - chances are he might wind up making most of that passage under headsails alone, anyway...
