I can't spot erythrocytes, but at least can spot gross crud when pulling a sample from the deepest part of my fuel tank (see photo). The fuel pickup is up off the bottom. With only one fuel tank, dirty fuel is an especially bad idea.

Sadly, the chain of events leading to the disaster had several steps, bad judgment ranking highest but each one if absent could have saved the ship.
