Cruising Sailors Forum Archive

Just spoke with my rudder buddy, and now boatless friend, Jim of the abandoned at sea CS36 Viewfinder

They're still in the Canaries but have tickets to the Caribbean mid March. They already have a boat or two in their sites.

Couldn't talk about the insurance situation because they just filed.

As to what they got off the boat, it really wasn't much. Laptop, sat phone, camera and very few clothes.

I asked him why he didn't scuttle the boat and he laughed... "I had a lot going on at the time" He also went on a bit about the decision to abandon ship The Portuguese navy told him that there were no ships anywhere near them save the Amazon Guardian, which itself had be diverted to Rotterdam so was on a very rare track. They advised his to take them, up on an offer of rescue. So he put the crew ahead of the boat and accepted as any serious sailor would do.

Jim said he still would rather have gone through the winter they have so far rather than had spent in and above average snowy Montreal winter. (Not me...somedays a bad day at sea isn't better than a good day at the office)
