I have two boats so that means I have perhaps three times as much work to do as I would with only one boat. Here are the plans for Spring boat work as of today.
Allied 36 ketch - I have several small projects planned. The biggest is to replace all the on deck wood. That project is brought on by two things. First, the teak toe rails are screwed to tops of the fiberglass bulwarks and they leak. So the teak is coming off. I will glass up all the screw holes and install new mahogany toe rails. Switching over to mahogany toe rails will require that I also replace the old teak cockpit coamings and winch pads with mahogany. That change is also required by my second major project. I will also remove the teak cabin top hand rails and replace them with mahogany hand rails. My second major project is to upgrade my Anderson 40ST winches to electric. That will involve making new winch pads since the current teak pads are too thick for the electric drives to penetrate them and the deck. Making the winch pads lower will require making cutouts in the cockpit coamings to allow for the lower height of the winches. The third project is to move the engine instrument panel so I can reach it without kneeling on the cockpit sole. That will involve glassing up the hole i the forward end of the cockpit where the panel is now and repainting the cockpit. Project number four is a small one. I am going to repack the propeller shaft stuffing box because the packing is leaking pretty badly. That project is only worth mentioning because it involves working under the cockpit, which is a very tight space. The next projext is to install a new electrical panel. That will involve building a new top for my chart table to allow me to move the panel outboard a bit. Moving the panel outboard will expose a couple of holes that wires now pass through. The final project is to repaint all the white bulkheads. I am also going to replace all the interior light fixtures bulbs with LED bulbs.
1936 wooden powerboat - I have five projects to do on this boat. First I am going to remove the current leaky Alaskan yellow sedar side and aft decks and replace them with glassed over marine plywood with a teak deck laind on top of the plywood. During that project I will replace seven planks above the waterline on the port side that the deck leaks have caused to rot. The third project is to extend the cabin top by about 2.5 feet to get rid of the leaky sunbrella cover that is there now. I will laminate two new beams for the cabin top and build the extended top from douglas fir bead board on the bottom and marine plywood with dynel over it on the top. I will then repaint the entire cabin top. As part of that project I will replace two plastic flexible side curtains with lexan windows to eliminate leaks there. Finally I will install the webasto diesel heater I bought over the winter. Oh yes, I will also paint the topsides, varnish the cabin house and paint the bottom.
These projects should keep me pretty busy for April and May.
