I think it is. At least for the higher end production builders of sailboat like Sabre, Morris, Hinckley that took the racer cruiser type of design from the 60's-70's and through the end of the century.
New racing sailboat design is still alive, new daysailing design is still alive, but where is cruising boat design? I guess "new" cruising design is a little bit in performance boats with racing priority first(J boats, some new EU designs). And some "new"cruising design, on a lighter level, is in some of the bigger daysailers with easy close to home daysailing the priority.
The evolution of cruising sailboat design of Sabre, Morris, Hinckley(and many others now gone), that followed the lifestyle that was very popular through the 80's, 90's and beyond, seems to have stopped. Is it the boats that are changing or is the cruising lifestyle changing?
The last 10 years of recession put the final nails in the coffin of what these semi production racer cruiser builders turned out.
When(if) the buyers of new semi custom production sailboats return, I wonder what they will want?
