Like that boat, owners moved to the west coast. Essentially, most of these boats simply represent a higher expense than those of us that do our own work, are willing to pay, to do the same sailing. Some is a desire for "pride of ownership" of a gleaming bright yacht(everybody does a little posing )
My guess is the typical 40' woodenboat annual maintenance/indoor storage/launch costs the hands-off owner about 10k on the low end and 20k if more labor intensive maintenance items are required and the boat is "turn key" at the dock.
Repairs are another thing all together, especially on a wooden hull that is "tired". Compared to a second home(what I deal with clients), boats are cheap though!
I don't see a glass boat costing too much less for the hands-off owner(switch waxing and buffing for brushing on coatings). If it's a much less labor required boat, the trade is a higher up front cost for a newer boat.
Maine has some lower rates than yards in Southern NE making the exodus worth the trip.
Here's a "low" maintenance wooden boat that switches painting(can be skipped for a couple-three years) for brightwork. Maybe save 5-10%/ year? No two boats, and their stories, are alike.
