Hi Al,
I've always been intrigued by going in there, so I anchored nearby to await slack tide to scout it out first in the dinghy...
First of all, the water just POURS in and out through that gap, there's only a few minutes of slack, it seems...
There's a few really large boulders on the bottom that spooked me, and the passage to the south of the big rock in the middle - which appeared to be the only passable way thru - is extremely tight, and I just decided it wasn't worth the risk. A grounding in there could be disastrous, you could easily damage your rudder, or worse...
Now, I can't remember for certain, but I'm pretty sure I scouted it at low water. You'd obviously have far more margin at high tide, although very little additional horizontal clearance. But it was the large boulders that were the deal breaker for me, and there is no way I'd try it without having someone up on the bow as a lookout...
Absolutely mind-boggling, that they used to put big schooners back in there to ride out hurricanes, that would have been something to see...
best regards,
Jon
