Cruising Sailors Forum Archive

I will watch this thread!!!!

I used vacuum panels in my last (2002) upgrade. The type I used were not metal, they had a plastic coating like a "space blanket". They are now no longer any good, for a couple of different reasons. I was aware of the limited life when I installed them,,,,,, way back then. Who knew I would still be cruising the same boat?

With a small boat, I would love to save space in the box I finally decide to use. I will NOT shell out US $1500.00 + for insulation!!! NO WAY!!!!

I was roaming the net the other day and found a site that is using Aerogel. In my past life I worked at the company it was developed in and met the guy who made it. His office was full of the stuff. The site I found was using it for home insulation. It's at; http://www.thermablok.com/thermal-insulation/frequently-asked-questions.htm

I have sent a couple of emails but got no reply. What I wanted to find was the stuff they use for the thermal tiles on the space shuttle, but it's BAD to try to cut/trim yourself! And hard to find in any quantity.
