One of the first upgrades I did was to replace the old VHF, it was likely original equipment in the early 90's. I got one of the Standard Horizon Explorer series which of course comes with the DSC capability. Last night was really the first chance I had to really study the owner's manual in depth and was somewhat overwhelmed with the amount of information and the capabilities of the radio. I admit I'm old, possibly stuck in the past, and not enthusiastic about all the new technology, but really? My thought in this particular choice of radio was the large display, and the ability to set up the DSC distress button. I also like the weather scan capability.

Does anyone really use the ship to ship DSC calling, message and other capabilities? I just feel it is unnecessary.
