I live in Oriental and this story is an interesting one of lack of local power and jurisdiction over a cruiser who clearly needs to go.
Yes he has overstayed his visa. But is ICE doing anything about it- no.
Yes he defrauded the local merchant. But is local law enforcement doing anything about it- not so far.
The USCG has boarded and investigated the boat, presumably for thruhull locks and apparently he is in compliance.
The Town of Oriental has no jurisdiction over the harbor unless the state legislature gives them that authority. But the legislature doesn't meet until next year.
So nothing is being done. Perhaps if the local merchants and the local charities band together and shun him, maybe just maybe he will leave.
There are 2 or 3 more boats with similar but not as egregious overstaying situations in Oriental's harbor. One or more have promised to leave, but not so far.
