from a flag halyard is hard to beat and, per Practical Sailor a few years ago, is ones best option. Mine is there permanently, but I've solved some the the problems associated with its installation by attaching it to the spreader where a flag halyard once was with a short 3" permanent wire. I then have a wire from the side of the Davis horizontally to the shroud. This prevents any spinning and most motion. Finally, I have run a line from the bottom of the Davis down to the cleat to which the flag halyard was once attached. Now there is virtually no motion of the Davis. This installation requires a trip up to the 1st spreader, but you do it once and then it is done for good. I have had many years and miles with this installation without problems.
It should be noted that my operating approach is that all ship are trying to kill me and given any opportunity to do so, will. As such, I always get out of their way even if I, in theory, have the right of way. It is a good way to increase the odds of having a long life.
