and just send a location when you want. I may do that for just the reason you state. Also there is a consideration of battery life. Fully charged it runs 100 hours (they claim) with 10 minute position reports. However lets say you pick the 4th day into your charge to sink. While you are sinking, you probably don't have time to charge the thing. Keeping it plugged in isn't really an option as it need to be outside to report. Better (in a boat) to turn it on once a day or every few days and send a position.

There are people using these in their sailplanes, and that is one of the reasons I bought it. Cross country in a sailplane, you don't really know where you are going, don't know how long it will take, and don't know if you will make it back. Where I fly no cell coverage is typical (high western desert). The inReach is nice for aircraft (compared to Spot) because it also reports speed and altitude. The wife will know if I am going to be back for dinner, or maybe she can spend the life insurance....
