() If it's crystal clear-like glass, with no sign of amber color, it may well be water based. Those water borne finishes were very popular 7 years ago. I don't think oil based varnish will stick to that, Neil. Did you sand it a bit first? If it's waterbased, you can just go to that for recoating. It's easy to work with, no fumes.
