Doug, you really wouldn't
In Response To: A interesting question. ()

want to use a "Dielectric" grease to make up a connection. For "making up a connection" you would want to us an waterproof conductive grease. The only thing you would want to insulate from is the environment. There was an engineer by the name of Babcock who did extensive testing of electrical connections made up with various greases and cleaning techniques. His final recommendations was that to get a truly clean and tight connection on the standard aluminum 4 bolt pad used in almost every modern substation electrical connection was as follows. You clean the connector with a wire brush while the connector is under grease. In other words, wire brush through grease that's already on the connector. Then you clean off the dirty grease, reapply new grease and clean through the grease a second time. Finely, clean off the dirty grease, apply new grease and make up the connection and torque the connection to 45 foot pounds using 316 1/2 in stainless bolts. So, apply this to our application on boats and you get the message. Clean the connectors really good and make up the connection as tight as you can without breaking anything and use good old water proof axel grease.
