Your strategy is a good one. But I am a little puzzled how the Delco alternator will fit in the 3.15" dual foot Yanmar mounting.

The Echo Charger is a nice device. It limits current to the secondary battery bank (typically the starter) so you don't have to fuse it or use big wire. But a combiner (yandina.com) is a cheaper alternative.
