You're on the right track!

The built-in regulators are woefully inadequate for charging a deep cycle house bank.
I've got an ARS-4, but have yet to install it - still using an old AutoMac from Weems $ Plath. It works. Alternator output goes to the house bank, then to the start battery through a combiner. The combiners (numerous brands available) are all voltage sensitive relays - either contact goes above 13.5V (or so) and the relay closes allowing charge current to flow. Voltages drop and the relay opens, isolating the two banks. Can't beat Yandina's warranty.
When sizing your alternator, keep in mind that flooded lead-acids will only accept about 25% of their rating. ie: a 150 amp-hr battery will only accept about 38 amps. And this is a maximum when the battery is low. AGMs will accept more, and some folks spend the premium for them to charge at higher rates and reduce charge time.
Battery monitor systems are also good things - still on my list.
Then there's my friend whose Corolla started giving him charging fits - solved the charging problem by installing a voltmeter and a toggle switch. Voltage got low and get turn on the switch, sending 12V to the alternator field. Voltage got high & he'd turn off the switch. Worked for him.
