I don't trust my ipad for this reason and keep the onboard cp running always. I'm not sure what his problem was with the ships cp? They are quite reliable. And you do need to be sure your back-up, back-up (his iphone) is set up.
I assume the article meant the gps was interfaced with his AP? And his crew is his 'eyes'?
The story is actually quite a coup for today's electronics. It sounds risky to me to be sailing blind this way, but not nearly as possible before today's electronics. Glad nobody got hurt.
This does prove that it's the same old problem that get's you(no lookout), not today's better navigation tools.
