My only point has always been that the plethora of today's gizmos can often make it so much easier for sailors to do that... Trust me, I have many personal examples of having done so, losing that 'situational awareness' while preoccupied with some other 'issue', whether it be mechanical, or electronic...
This one seemed a classic example of EAL Flight 401 Syndrome, the first-ever crash of a jumbo jet... The flight crew simply forgot to keep flying the plane, while they grappled with a relatively minor issue with a warning indicator light...
