It keeps the boat from blowing over in the winter...

We often get 60+ knot winds in the winter which would put a huge strain on the rigging of a boat on stands. No point in taking the chance to avoid a couple of hours work. Also in our case, the boat is trucked about a mile over the road to the storage yard. Having the masts up would make that rather difficult because of power lines and trees that overhang the roads.
