This is dead nuts simple. Put the threaded end into your mouth. Suck. Have some one watch the needle to see if it moves. You should be able to pull a few inches of mercury.

Now if you want to calibrated it or make sure it goes to 30" under a full vacuum, that is another story. But I would only do the foregoing.
