Al, you must have had the last Automac

still in working condition! They were simple but I applaud your ability to babysit it. I suppose you had the one with the little red button that tripped the Automac back to the internal regulator when you hit the set point charged voltage? I had the original one that you couldn't set. You just had to sit and watch the voltage. I have to admit that I boiled my batteries a couple of times before I "Upgraded to the new type". It was a forced upgrade because my original one melted down just south of Playa del Coca, Coasta Rica. It took out my Old Paris Rohn alternator when it went. I ended up on an alternator quest that lasted until Panama where I found a 100 amp Delco. That worked but I had to put a switch in the field winding because I was running the internal regulator and when I started the engine it gave a full charge. That was OK but when I had to move the boat, the poor little MD-7 Volvo couldn't pull both moving the boat and the alternator. As soon as I put it in gear the engine would die. If I got in trouble at night or had to start the engine and move right away I was screwed. I had to sit and wait for the regulator to back off enough to keep the damn engine running. I put the switch in the field winding so a I could completely cut out the alternator in an emergency. Finely I had a friend fly down with a new Automac and the right alternator. Fun times.
