They expect no obligations to be placed upon them and to be transported safely. If the owner wants satisfied customers and not scared ones who will never come back or make a recommendation the tone and manner of the welcome before leaving the dock is critical. Showing via personal example is the best policy and generally appreciated. One Captain I know wears a PFD just because some think its macho not to do so, and he wants to dispel this idea right off the bat, and starts his safety lecture by then taking it off and than putting it on and showing each passenger where they are located. He says " Anyone can put this on and is encouraged to do so at at any time, but when you see me put mine on all must follow my example. Not because we are in danger but because is part of good seamanship and I want you and I to be protected." While wearing the preserver he shows the basics of the boat emphasizing its safety features for their enjoyment and the whereabouts of the first aid kit, the radio and head. He reminds the guests to wear hats and stay hydrated and asks them to please pay attention to his directions. By the time he is finished he had bonded with the passengers they feel part of the enterprise and like all things--it goes well. He expects noting from them but to listen to him and they expect to be told what to do.. He tells them the time of departure and when they can expect to come back to the dock. He asks if anyone has forgotten there hats, meds or sunglasses.
