It was blowing 23 from the west when we dropped anchor. The thing about it was that the wind and current conspired to keep us beam to the seas coming around the corner. We were rolling pretty severely the first few hours. But then the wind went down and things improved.
If not for all the previous trips out the strait motivating me to have everything stowed tight it would have been even more miserable. I actually re-stowed everything and stuffed containers and lockers with bubble wrap packaging stuff to keep things from moving and making noise. So it's all tight and quiet now which really helps psychologically.
I was expecting to be pushed back hard against the anchor line but instead the chain never went tight the whole night. With the current going out I was worried about getting set toward the rocks. I wouldn't recommend the 2 fathoms thing it puts you too close to the rocks. We dropped anchor in 3 fathoms.
I've written up a bit of a trip report for the weekend that goes into more detail. But my opinion is that it was Ok for us but we had moderate 10 - 20 conditions that day. For us if the current allowed there wouldn't have been a lee shore and we would have had a very long ways to drag before it became a problem but it would have had to be much more windy before it would overcome the current. I can't say I'd want to try that in any more wind or wind from a different direction. We sort of figured if it was too rough out of the west to anchor there you probably wouldn't get there anyway when traveling west and if traveling east there wouldn't be much reason to stop there. For us it was more of an experiment to see if it could be done since we had a relatively light day. I probably wouldn't have tried had it been more windy.
