Wow! Newfoundland is a long way. Friends just returned from there.

He's an ornithologist so gets up that way quite often. He's taken the ferry but says the easiest way for him is to drive the 6 hours or so to Halifax and fly out of there. A short jump(hour?). They stay in B&B's and rent a car which is a whole different experience than you guys are getting by boat. Either way, it looks like a beautiful place to visit.
