Sailing up Somes Sound is always a good idea, but when the South wind stacks fog against MDI,
In Response To: A bit of wind ()

it's a great idea. Pea soup outside of Northeast Harbor, we raised sails off Greening Island and headed into the Sound in the light breeze.

The fog began to thin beyond Flying MT., and out of the haze came a Cat Ketch, also under sail. Light and nimble, they ghosted toward our bow. We exchanged a few pleasant words with the strangers in the dead silence, as if we knew each other. I guess when you sail by at 2 to 3 knots, in thick fog, you sort of do know each other.

The light breeze allowed a calm jibe close to the eastern side, and we headed toward majestic Valley Cove. The canyon- coast of the cove was shrouded in the fog but our legs could imagine it's steepness from many past hikes.

The chart doesn't do Valley Cove justice either. Yet as you see on the chart, you can nearly stuff your bow into the trees without running aground. I don't think I ever saw less than 30 feet at any time along the shore of the Sound.

Not wanting to rush the sail-it's only 5 miles, we rolled up the genoa to ride on main and mizzen. The boat pretty much self-tending like that, there's not a lot to do except enjoy a quiet sail.

Almost at the top, we've left fog behind and entered a nice sunny day in Somesville.

The next day(here in nearly the same spot), we rode the forecast Northwesterlies back down the Sound, unrolled the genoa off Southwest Harbor and continued to the Bass Harbor Bar, all on the same tack. Thank you Somes Sound.
