Cruising Sailors Forum Archive

I just went through your newly posted log-blog and some photos.

Beautiful. I'll go through the photos over the winter(Isle of Shoals shots are stunning-beautiful place in your lens).

Your short log style description is always interesting. A complaint I read, you didn't sail enough. I see several reasons, one of which was light-ish winds this past August. Wasn't just the winds robbing you of sailing. Time was your enemy(as you know!), as well. You just didn't have the time to sail most places.

Take for instance the saturday when you'd hoped to sail from Pickering and through the Eggemoggin Reach. The southerly wind was weak inside the Reach I figured from your log. And it was light, but ample, if you had more time.

We sailed a nice slow broad reach from Rockport to Warren Island, that day, via Gilkey Harbor. I recall it was around 3-5 knots of speed, slower in Gilkey. But we had the time to sail, all afternoon, and it was a delightful sail.

The next day you started in 'glassy' conditions, probably early-ish(least wind). That was the day you wrapped the floating warp! Painful to read!! A day from hell on vacation.

We on the other hand had to wait for company on Warren Island, until around noon. By then, the SW'er filled a bit and we sailed off our mooring on Warren Island, tacked through Gilkey averaging no more than 3 knots, then upwind through Penobscot Bay-Camden,tack-middle bay-tack Rockport Harbor. 15 minutes power to get to docks to drop off company.

It's safe to say for me, when I'm away from home, I think in a 5 knot frame of mind. I also have more of an itinerary in mind, often more affected by my family onboard. YOU travel with a family of sorts, your good friends, the Merry's. Not easy to catch all 4 people in a, "oh, let's just sail where the wind will take us for 4 hours today,.." mood. Everybody clock is ticking.

I'm not suggesting you dump the Merry's-friends like that are the joy of life. You're a truly unique group out there.

Here's my advice.(that's why we're here).

I recommend that all four of you DO NOT return to Maine in your sailboats, until you can allow another week to sail the same general area as you did, in 2014. That said, you will sail to your hearts content. Doubt you'll wind a warp, either.

Simple. Forward this to Paul and Sally, please.

This is the day you were powering in 'glassy' headed to Isle Au Haut, about the catch that warp. We sailed the light SW'er through Gilkey. It was slow, 3 knots max, but one of the best sails of the season.
