I thint that you are wise not to sign-on to a "mission" which ties you to the land and to putting in a lot of sweat and time you could otherwise have available for whatever.
Don't become "house-poor" in a situation where the property is effectively illiquid or woud have to be sold a loss or big discount.
Your rational makes good sense. Don't trade flexiblity and opportunity to do other things for an obligation that you don't have to assume and/or may not be prepared to committ to.
