Commuter Cruiser has ads by choice - the sidebar has Google AdSense ads and also an Amazon affiliate ad - in hopes of offsetting some of the costs associated with maintaining the site. Hosting fees, domain fees and also maintenance fees - the first times I attempted a Wordpress update, I crashed the entire site for several days.

You can have a Wordpress site with no ads - simply don't use ad widgets in the sidebar - or just do a theme without a sidebar. Using Wordpress does not mean you must monetize the site.

The ads do offset some of the costs, but overall, it's a money losing proposition. I do it because I enjoy it and certainly not for generating cash flow.
