Yup, 'Coming Soon, to an Anchorage Near You...'
In Response To: From CES this year..... ()

Hey Tom,

I suppose the only question is, will they eventually drown out the hum of Honda generators being run on deck? (grin)

There's already concern in megayacht circles about the Security and Privacy issues these things can raise. One of my superyacht magazines even had an article about them last year. Not hard to imagine paparazzi employing these things in places like St Barts, and hovering over the 250-footer being chartered by Beyonce' and Jay-Z (you know who they are, right? (grin)) in a effort to capture a juicy image...

I had an uncomfortably close call with one of these things in Newport, last September during the Boat Show... Late one afternoon, I was taking my dink into the the dinghy dock at the ferry terminal, and passing in front of the Newport Yacht Club... Right when some asshole on a McMegayacht parked there decided to launch his latest toy... he obviously had yet to become very skilled at flying it, and the thing took a rather sudden and uncontrolled 'dip' right in my direction, definitely an uncomfortably close call... I rarely resort to this, but I definitely gave him the appropriate 'salute', and would have had a little 'chat' with the guy, had he not been occupied with learning how to fly the stoopid thing... In Newport Harbor during the weekend of the Boat Show, no less...

Seems just a matter of time, before an innocent boater gets hurt by one of these things... The proliferation of these things will definitely pose a problem, which needs to be addressed soon... Lots of reports in the local news lately, from commercial pilots arriving and departing from JFK, spotting drones in the restricted airspace, and above the FAA's maximum allowed elevation...

Best regards,

Jon
