The PROVIDENCE sure took a cropper in Newport in this storm.

I don't criticize or second quess disasters at sea much, but on land, I might. Storing boats is building. Bracing, triangulating. You can't allow buildings to fall down during construction(I have,... it's really expensive).

This boat is over a hundred feet. It also had the full rig in it, I think. And for these old topsail rigs, that's a lot of windage. I see big boats like this stored on stands in this area quite often. Some are winter stored and usually have the rigs in.

My first thought looking at this(I took the photo off a link on Wave Train) is, if those are all the stands on one side, that's not enough. I would think a boat that size would have 8-10 stands on each side(stands are cheap and you charge for them-load em up)? You want to build a crib, a cradle, around the boat.

I know there is a big stout stand amidships on each side, but the hulls ability to pivot on it's keel is part of what the stands prevent. And every set has to be chained under the keel.

Maybe that was all done and some stands have been removed.

And here's some worthless hindsight; if the completed cradle structure was at all suspect, then some ties from the masts to the ground to any available fixed point(dock cleats, travelift(s), heavy forklifts, whatever,... would have made for a good nights sleep with the forecast winds comin'
