Gene, I use a small bead of 3M 4000 UV protected white sealant.

I tape the teak slightly above where the teak meets the deck and also down on the fiberglass as well. I end up with less then a 1/4 in wide bead. I varnish down onto the bead about half way and the smooth surface makes taping easy. It's easy enough to do the first time and it keeps water from getting in under the cap due to the dried out bedding compound. My boat is 36 years old and I'll admit that there are a couple of spots that are dried out but the thought of removing the cap rail and re-bedding it is out of the question. This has been a good 2nd option. I pulled the post cockpit combing off and re-bedded it and, holy shit, what a lot of work! I can't even imagine what pulling the entire cap would cost in both time, labor and money. I'd start that project and be dead lone before it ever got close to being done.
