When these fishing boats sink, especially in winter, I just shake my head thinking, "nobody is fishin' today..." I rarely get any backstory, about who, why.
Turns out( via article by Eva Murray-writer on Matinicus also in the Pilot-good read), this father and son had left Matinicus on a pre-blizzard supply run for wood pellets and what not, maybe even stuff for neighbors(less than 20 neighbors out there).
Off Owls Head, the 35'er went down fast(5F degree air, 37F water). As the Murray said, sheer luck the boat didn't sink out in the bay. They had survival suits onboard(thanks, Mom?!), and went right in the water after the May day.
The Ferry -Rockland to Vinalhaven- nearby, got the may-day call, dropped a small boat, and plucked them out of the water.
Further, the Matinicus writer said they headed right for Hamilton Marine(the fishermen's GAP), for dry cloths.
