It's safer and faster than trying to clear a basket. They are an amazing bred.
As for the video or photos from the air -- it's a whole lot different on the water than it looks from up in the air.
I used to be a lifeguard as a kid. In the freshwater lake, I'd have to go in about once or twice a week after someone. If it was an adult, you never knew what you'd face as you approached them. That was in flat water with people "around". I can't imagine doing that hundreds of miles from shore in bad to horrible seaways trying to grab, control, then evacuate desperate souls.
