The paper charts are equally unreliable

In fact, the only good charts for that area are electronic ones that I and several others created from a very excellent guide book. So electronic charts are your best option there. The problem is a chicken/egg one - you have to get here to get the charts.

Some off the wrecks have occurred at night, but more have happened in broad daylight. Several times I have jumped in my dinghy and ran out just in time to stop someone from plowing into a reef they were not aware of. Likewise, I have contacted boats on VHF attempting to enter lagoons from seaward by going straight over the barrier reef.

And sometimes the level of stupidity astounds us. We watched one boat come into an anchorage with a very obvious patch reef in the middle of it. They motored right into and on it. Several of us spent a long time pulling them off and getting them anchored. The next morning, they upped anchor and plowed straight into the same reef again - requiring a second rescue.
