In spite of the large number of boats in our area, there are very few boat related services. If you want to "write the check" it's pretty likely it will be to a guy that someone knows who does stuff like that. There are very few mechanics, the ones we have schedule way more work than they could ever do just to keep people quiet. Support/maintenance services pretty much don't exist. This is a DIY area, you might get shrink wrap done. Bottom paint? Good luck! We had a club member hire "a guy" last year to come, winterize his sailboat, remove the batteries and cover it. The work was paid for, the owner lived out of town so never came and checked. Nothing was done. When the owner arrived in the spring, the water was up to mid-interior, engine was trashed, batteries frozen. They spent the entire summer trying to hire people to fix everything. I honestly don't know if they ever got to use the boat last season.
That is a major factor in ownership here. You better be prepared to do the maintenance and winterization yourself. I'm not sure I'm ready to wash, buff and wax a bigger boat. Sanding and bottom paint is a whole other issue.
