I need to terminate some Raymarine cat 5 cables - ends had to be cut to get the right length and pull them where they needed to go. This is for the radar and wifi antennas. I tried to find other cables, but the Raymarine ones - as expensive as they are - are very high quality compared to anything else I could find. They are dual shielded (foil and braid) and have tinned stranded cores.
They use a shielded RJ45 that makes good contact to the braided shield in the cable. I have found a few shielded RJ45 plugs, but they are pretty ugly compared to the one used by Raymarine. The shield does not make proper contact with the braid. Some just have a spike that is supposed to penetrate the insulation, others require a drain wire be crimped separately. Adding to that, most RJ45 plugs are an insulation displacement type made to work with solid core wire which is the common Cat 5. These cables are stranded core.
Does anyone know of a brand and source for the plugs and crimpers? I could order a bunch of different ones and eventually learn, but I'm hoping someone has already done that....
