Diesel Question

There is an exhaust (excess??) hose connected to the cap on the valve cover of my Ford Lehman diesel engine. It always had a little smoke coming from it. You could certainly smell it down below after running the engine. I had two suggestions from people I respect but don't know if either is the best answer.

1. Take the end of the hose and place it in a plastic gallon milk jug in the bilge below the engine. Then cover it with oil diaper rags to absorb any fumes and/or oil that might blow out. I tried this, it worked "some" but did not totally alleviate the problem.

2. Take the end of the hose and rout it back into one of the two breathers on the engine and let it reabsorb the smoke. I tried this and it seems to be working fine.

So, my question is: Is there any reason why I shouldn't use method two? I one concern was the possibility of "dieseling". Is that a rational concern? What, if any are other issues of doing this. I was getting really tired of the smoke and smell below.
