When in Rome ...

Hi Tom,

Sounds like you know the city pretty well. If you have the time and inclination and haven't seen them before, a couple sites somewhat off the beaten track were quite memorable: the excavations at the old Roman port at Ostia Antica are quite interesting and worth a visit. Some of the intricate mosaic floors showing wrestling scenes and the like were stunning.

Also, while Lynnie rolls her eyes at it, I found the Capuchin Crypt eerily memorable. An extensive display of human bones in various configurations housed in dark, mysterious underground chambers. One room has a bunch of skeletons looking out at you with the inscription:

"What you are now we used to be; what we are now you will be..."

That image has stuck with me since I saw it about 12 years ago. Maybe not for everyone.
