Handy data. It's always on 24/7 when we're onboard. This photo was taken September 5, the end of a 2 week sail(206 nm-337hrs), so the full tally is a little light but we've not been sailing a lot since this. Other data such as time stopped, moving etc. is pretty flawed. A boat at anchor is always moving.
Fairly typical year when we stay close to home: About 450 NM total.
Going back over time under sail; because we were close to home and under little or no schedule, my guess is we sailed about 3/4 to 2/3's of these miles. We didn't use much of the 80 gallons of diesel, we 'store', and I guess actual engine hours are somewhere around 30. (change the oil-yes, fuel filters-go for 3 seasons?)
I can tell by my photos (another good record keeper), how many days we spent onboard but that number stays about the same- around 30 days and nights.
A friend took this phone cam shot as we sailed into the fog a few weeks ago. Grainy shots improve in b&w and lose their time frame(this could be the original owner in 1961, except for the main sail).
I remember we were headed home, just a half a dozen miles away. Plenty of time to sail.
How many miles do you suppose the average(define average) coastal sailor covers in a season?
