As many here will know, Arctic Terns typically migrate 40-60,000 miles between the Arctic / Northern Latitudes, and Antarctica. Even young terns have been tracked flying from the UK to Austalia in just a few months, always seeking the sunnier side of the planet.
My wife took this pic at the Farne Islands (NE coast of the UK) last June, an important breeding sanctuary. The terns are very protective of their nests, and attack all visitors. The scientists told us there is no harm to the birds having humans in their midst. Not sure the same can be said to humans - I later found they had drawn blood in numerous places on my head.
