The rigger replacing my steering cables emailed me that his studs are longer than the ones on the old cables. Would they work?
So I send this photo back of the space in the quadrant:
He replies on email: No. And he can't find shorter ones. He calls Edson. They say no, we don't use studs. What now?
I talk to a good friend who knows everything about old boats. He had to replace cables on his 1967 wooden boat. Edson,... supplied him with a 'kit'.
It's brilliant! No tedious measuring, tighten in place(my spot is small but I think I could manage the system in the 4").
And then I notice chain size/pitch: 5/8" Measure mine, oops, 1/2". Hmmm, new sprocket? But will that fit my old shaft and bronze bearings,...? $300 + $120, +$100, +....??? This is sounding like a new binnacle!
No no no. I don't have time for this let alone buying new stuff when old stuff is still working fine!
But the chase -I think- has shown me a relatively simple, solution. I'll buy at Hamilton: Wire rope, thimbles, Eye studs(something should fit the length-may have to cut) and bull dog clamps. May as well Nicro press a thimble on the chain to clevis pin connection(no need for a swage fitting). All this is good enough for Edson, I'll be happy with the strength, ...if I can make it work, I mean,.. I will make it work.
