We are in the water for the season, uneventful launch other than pea soup fog that rolled in just as the travel lift dropped us in. Diesel fired right up too.
Saturday we launched boats in the rain, Sunday morning we launched boats in the snow and sleet, that was a first for me.
Sunday afternoon it cleared and although it was freezing cold I wanted to check something that I have been trying to figure out since last fall. The furling main never worked right. In fact you could look at the mast and see that the main halyard was inside the track at the top and base of the mast but out of the track by about 1 1/2" by the spreaders. The mandrel inside was also banging on the mast. I did find an addendum from Seldon for the owner's manual on how to set up the rig for the furling mainsail option. I picked up a LOOS gauge over the winter and spent an hour or so re-tensioning the rig, it was wayyyy too tight. When I was all done I sighted up the mast and the main halyard was now inside the whole way up and the mast was quiet, no banging!! It appears that there was too much bend in the mast, the mandrel and sail must have been rubbing about mid way up so were hard to take out and roll in. I had the sails with me but the wind was not cooperating so I'll have to wait until the cold fronts stop blowing through, maybe this Friday we can give it the real test and load up the main sail. I feel pretty good about it though, you can really see a difference.
