I did not see any noticeable gain in performance. However, it improved greatly when I went from parallel 12v to series 24v and allowed the MPPT controller to step down the voltage to charge my 12v banks. I can't say I understand why but the real world results made me a believer.

If wiring the panels in parallel I'd agree a PWM controller is just fine.
