it was the boat icon that was pointing in the wrong direction and apparently the the bearings were "corrected" to that orientation.
So what you need is a button to set bearings to the GPS calculated values vs relative to boat heading.
Or throw it all out and get a hand-bearing compass, dividers, and a parallel rule. (My middle name is Ludd.)
