The loop was swedged on... which is why it was never an issue in the past... I think the current set up is simply not safe. Or the darn loops should be epoxied or super glued on...

Look at the pic below... and you can see that the end loop is one continuous part with the cable. You also see the corrosion... which is why I replaced the lifelines in the first place.
