Crossing Lake Ontario several years ago we had a swarm or biting flies on the boat. We swatted and swatted and they kept coming. I happened to look at the transom and it was black from the flies (on a white boat). I swatted at them for a while; by the time we crossed the lake they were mostly gone. A screen for the cockpit would have been very welcome.
