For gas, you need to use the yellowish tape made specifically for gas installations. The white stuff used on water pipes is against code for whatever reason.

Personally prefer the teflon semi liquid pipe dope. It's available in small tubes if you don't anticipate using much of the stuff or bigger bottles with a built in brush for applying it.
