Stick with the .001/inch. The criteria is to protect the shaft from bending fatigue, not to keep the engine from shaking.
Another thing, give your engine a good shove in the forward direction (like full ahead thrust). If the faces on the seal open up, you'll have to adjust the seal a bit tighter.
